Pressure relief refers to the ability of a sleep surface to distribute body weight evenly across the mattress. When pressure is balanced, the body can remain comfortable for longer periods without needing to shift position frequently.
This concept plays an important role in both sleep comfort and spinal health.
How pressure relief works
Pressure relief occurs when the sleep surface allows the body to contour into the mattress while still maintaining support beneath the spine.
This contouring increases the surface area over which body weight is distributed. By spreading pressure across a wider area, the force applied to any single point on the body is reduced.
The relationship between pressure and circulation
Excessive pressure can restrict blood flow in soft tissues. When circulation is reduced, the body may experience numbness or discomfort.
The body responds by prompting movement to restore blood flow. While these movements are natural, they can interrupt sleep cycles.
Why pressure relief improves sleep stability
When pressure is evenly distributed, the body is able to remain comfortable in one position for longer periods. This stability allows sleep cycles to progress without interruption.
Longer periods of uninterrupted sleep allow the body to spend more time in deeper stages of restorative sleep.
