How Much Sleep Do Humans Need
The amount of sleep required for healthy functioning varies between individuals, but scientific research has identified typical ranges for different age groups. For most adults, experts recommend between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.
Sleeping less than this range on a regular basis can reduce both physical and cognitive performance.
Sleep needs across the lifespan
Sleep requirements change as people age. Infants require the greatest amount of sleep because their brains and bodies are developing rapidly.
Typical recommendations include:
Newborns: 14 to 17 hours
Children: 9 to 11 hours
Teenagers: 8 to 10 hours
Adults: 7 to 9 hours
Why sleep duration matters
Sleep duration influences the number of sleep cycles the body completes each night. When sleep is shortened, the body may not reach the deeper stages of sleep required for physical recovery.
Insufficient sleep can also reduce time spent in REM sleep, which is essential for memory and emotional regulation.
Quality of sleep is also important
Although total sleep duration is important, sleep quality is equally significant. Frequent awakenings or discomfort during sleep can prevent the body from progressing through complete sleep cycles.
